Consultant in Psychological Medicine
Dr Bart Sheehan is a consultant in psychological medicine at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, where he has worked since 2013. This service is unique in providing integrated psychiatric care as part of general hospital medical care. His academic and clinical training was at Oxford and at the Maudsley Hospital in London. His MD was on somatization among older people. His previous clinical role was as an old age psychiatrist with a particular role in memory clinic diagnosis of early stage dementia. He has a strong research interest in the use of complex interventions for people with later life frailty, both in the community and in the important institutional settings -general hospitals and care homes. This includes trialling group exercise as a treatment for the commonest later life psychiatric disorders (depression and dementia), and the use of proactive liaison psychiatry to reduce NHS bed stays for older people admitted as unplanned medical admissions.
